2011 Demos and Events

2011 looks to be a great year! We are going to be offering hands on demos on most 2nd Thursdays in 2011 with a couple exceptions. There is no charge to attend the demos and we strive to give you the hands on opportunity to work with the materials at the demo. Demos as a rule are from 6-8pm and at our location.

The demo schedule is:

  • Jan 13th 2011 6-8pm Surfboard Building
  • February 10th 2011 6-8 pm Vacuum Bagging Techniques, including resin infusion, wet layup vacuum bagging, and veneering techniques.
  • March 10th 2011 6-8 pm Stitch and Glue Boat Building
  • April 14th 2011 6-8 pm Surfboard Building
  • May- NO DEMO- We'll be at the Anacortes Waterfront Festival
  • June 9th 2011 6-8pm How to Build Speaker Pods/Boxes
  • July 14th 2011 6-8pm Mold Making Techniques
  • August- NO DEMO
  • September- NO DEMO- come check us out at the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, we will have demo boats and paddleboards there that you can take out on the water.
  • October 13th 2011 6-8pm Stitch and Glue Boat Building
  • November 10th 2011 6-8pm Vacuum Bagging Techniques, Resin Infusion, Wet Layup Vacuum Bagging, and Veneering.
  • December 8th 2011 6-8pm Surfboard Building

2011 Events

  • May 21st 2011 We will be competing in the quick and dirty boat building contest at the Anacortes WA waterfront festival. We took 2nd last year and intend to take 1st this year!
  • September 8-11th 2011 Wooden Boat Festival, Port Townsend WA. Join us for 4 days of wooden boat fun! We will have finished boats and paddleboards on hand that you can take out on the water.
If there is ever a demo you would like us to do just let us know, we're always looking for ideas and the whole point of doing them is to provide you with the information and skills that you need to be successful!

Resin Infusion Carbon Fiber Balsa Core Panel

Yesterday we had the opportunity to go help the Granite Falls High School Ecomarathon Race teams build a carbon panel to use on their Urban Concept car.

They are competing in two categories in the Shell Ecomarathon, which is a contest sponsored by Shell Oil to see who can get the most miles per gallon. This is an awesome project to watch the students participate in because it takes A LOT of work but is also very tangible project that requires bringing together a wide variety of disciplines and decision making. Last year they built their cars from the ground up with relatively small teams and this year they are improving on last years' cars.

The Urban Concept team finished their car up last year just a few days before it was supposed to ship to the race and they were surprised to find that it was significantly overweight. Shell let them bring the car and run in the race but their results didn't count. This year they have dismantled the car and are working on getting the weight out and bringing and improved product to the race.
